Police raid drug factory in Batam

Police have raided a major ecstasy factory in Batam, arresting six suspects including two Taiwanese nationals and confiscating Rp 454 billion (US$49 million) worth of drugs.

National Police chief Gen. Sutanto said Monday night that Saturday’s operation was the result of close cooperation between Indonesian police and the drug enforcement agencies of Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Australia and the United States.

The operation began with a raid in Pluit, Muara Karang, in Jakarta, where an Indonesian man was arrested for possession of 49 kilograms of methamphetamine originating in Batam.

In Batam, police found manufacturing equipment and 150 gallons or 568 liters of liquid methamphetamine worth Rp 454 billion. They also arrested two Taiwanese nationals, identified as Wang Chin I and Tsai Tsai Cheng, and four Indonesians, identified as Jaelani Usman, Darwin Silaban, Syaed Abubakar and Apeng.

Sutanto said the operation again showed that the drug trade often involves international syndicates.

The drugs made in Batam were being sold not only in Indonesia but also in China and Taiwan, he said.
