On the record: Sarah Silaban - Akhirnya

Artist : Sarah, Album : Akhirnya.. (BMG Music)

It started with Tere early this year. Her alternative-pop debut album, Awal Yang Indah (Beautiful Start) added variety to both the local music scene and the genre most local female vocalists here belong to.

There is also Cindy Fatikasari, who has done the same with her debut Kala Kunanti (The Time I Wait) which is surprisingly OK. It is not as catchy and crisp as Tere’s, but it’s fine.

But surpassing both singers is newcomer Sarah Silaban, 26, a songwriter who is responsible for half the songs on Tere’s album.

A long time piano player, she comes up with this simple yet catchy pop album, with piano-based sound in a Chantal Kreviazuk and Vanessa Carlton mode, which is quite powerful.

The concept is nothing new, however. You’ve heard it all before. There is a similarity with the now-defunct duo called Jingga, although Sarah’s voice is better. The similarity can even been heard here in this album through Bening Jiwa (Pure Soul).

At one point, Sarah still cannot distinguish herself as Tere’s songwriter and writing for her own album.

But all in all, it is not bad at all. Besides, it’s a debut album, and she sure has the potential. We look forward to see her grow, instead of being another Jingga.
